Study Day sponsored by the ERC-Project “Opera and the Politics of Empire in Habsburg Europe, 1815–1914” at the Historical Seminar, Leipzig University in cooperation with GWZO and the Institute of Musicology at Leipzig University.

This event will explore connections between opera and political dramaturgy in Habsburg Galicia. Dietlind Hüchtker will compare the biographies of politically active women to shed light on the province’s social and national debates around 1900. Dietmar Friesenegger will examine the representation of crownland and Empire in the operatic entertainments mounted during the Imperial travels in the nineteenth century. Two reading sessions chaired by Corinne Geering will focus on the ideological underpinnings of Galicia’s history and on its theatrical establishments.

An opera salon with music and play reading will conclude the study day: contralto Monika Jägerova and guests will perform music by Artemowskyj, Hřímalý, Moniuszko, and Wagner.
