Material Cultural Hierarchies of the Ottoman and Habsburg Diplomacy in the Eighteenth Century

Gamze İlaslan's project adopts a cultural approach to diplomatic history, focusing on how Habsburg and Ottoman diplomats conveyed their political stances by exchanging and presenting material objects in the early 18th century. This study employs pilot case studies analyzing specific object groups—such as attire, culinary practices, decorative styles, and gifts. By employing material cultural analysis, it challenges prevailing narratives, including the Westphalian System, one-sided perspectives on cultural clashes, and notions of Westernization/Europeanization within the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century. By showcasing the intricate and transcultural aspects, this approach sheds light on the complex nature of diplomacy between the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires.
