Abstract

For me, Classical Archaeology involves cultural interactions and exchange between the Greco-Roman Mediterranean and its neighboring and successor cultures. I base both my research and my teaching on a close scrutiny of original artefacts, sites, and images which I strive to embed in larger, often transcultural and transhistorical contexts. I emphasize interconnections between geographically and chronologically dispersed visual and material cultures to trace iconographic and typological development, contexts of use, and transforming connotations. With Hellenistic genre representations and Roman sarcophagi, I study topics from the heart of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean. My interdisciplinary research on 'long Late Antiquity's' visual culture from a global perspective focusses on connectivities between the Mediterranean world and other regions of ancient Afro-Eurasia.
