Conversation between Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo (Humboldt University of Berlin) and Ferdiansyah Thajib (Leipzig University)

Rosa Cordillera A. Castillo and Ferdiansyah Thajib came to Germany from Manila and Yogyakarta respectively to pursue their PhDs in Social Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin. At present they hold postdoc positions in Berlin and Leipzig. In this conversation they reflect upon their positionalities, the challenges they face in German academia as scholars from the Global South, and their responses to these challenges. They discuss inequalities and problems in knowledge production and point to the emotional and ethical labour and care involved in working with one’s own communities. Ultimately, both highlight decentering ethical and epistemic positions and, in the process, critically engage with issues related to decoloniality.
